The Chair

The LdP Chair focuses on the connected fields of energy economics, law, regulation, geo-politics and energy sources. Taking into account the public opinion we look at the acceptability of EU energy policies, the interrelation between its three cornerstones ‘environmental protection’, ‘liberalisation of markets’ and ‘security of supply’. Moreover, research is carried out in areas such as the EU Emission Trading Scheme, incentive-based regulation in the energy sector, the economics of global governance, institutional settings, market power, retail competition and network investments for the internal energy market.

Our mission is to produce the highest quality and in-depth research on European Energy Policy. The Chair’s fields of expertise and close connections to both European and national energy policy ommunities allow us to contribute to debate on policy and practice and to bridge between scholarship and practice in a contemporary Europe characterized by processes of change, questioning and debate.

Loyola de Palacio (1950-2006)

Loyola de Palacio was a Spanish politician, lawyer and stateswoman and a pioneer in the building of a European Energy Policy. Born in 1950, she was minister in the Spanish government and became in 1999 Vice-President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Energy and Transport (1999-2004). She was an independent spirit with a passion for European matters and concerns. Loyola left behind a lasting legacy and besides her other siblings, her sister Ana Palacio, an equally passionate and influential stateswoman, lawyer and politician who took a personal sponsorship for the Loyola de Palacio Chair.

“Our energy supply will depend more and more on the ability of the EU to function as a strong and cohesive player in the geopolitical arena. The framework for energy supply is changing, and we need to evolve political and geopolitical structures in response.”
