The South Gas Regional Initiative is led by the Spanish Energy Commission (CNE) and aims to integrate Portugal, France and Spain into one gas regional market. In 2010, this region had a gas consumption of nearly 90 bcm/year, covering 16.5% of the EU's gas market. The South region hosts important LNG entries to the European Union (55.8% (2010). This region largely contributes to diversification of energy sources of the European Union
